About the procedure

Dermatoscopy is a method of diagnosis that is actively used in dermatology and oncology for the purpose of researching superficial skin lesions with the help of a special device - a dermatoscope. This device allows you to multiply the object under study by determining its nature.

This study is designed to study neoplasms on the skin, dermatoscopy allows to detect malignant neoplasms and differentiate them from benign ones.

Despite its simplicity, dermatoscopy is an extremely important and sought-after diagnostic method, as it makes it possible to detect melanoma and other oncological diseases in the early stages of progression.

Indication

The main indications for dermatoscopy are:

suspicion of melanoma development;

formation of a neoplasm of dark brown, black or red shades on the skin;

uneven, excessively rapid growth of birthmarks, change in their color;

irregular shape, and asymmetry of the nevus;

a feeling of itching, tingling and soreness when in contact with the neoplasm.

For prevention, dermatoscopy is performed in the following cases:

presence of a large number of birthmarks or moles on the body;

birthmarks and pigment spots in people with light skin type;

heavy family history (cases of skin cancer in the family);

taking drugs from the group of oral contraceptives for more than a year;

if a person is often exposed to the sun;

work in production with aggressive chemicals, or is accompanied by various types of radiation.

Contraindication

The main advantage of dermatoscopy is the absence of contraindications. During the examination under the dermatoscope, traumatization or irradiation of the skin is excluded.

How is the procedure

How is the procedure performed?

Before the examination with a dermatoscope, the doctor conducts a general examination of the body, identifying neoplasms that cause suspicion and require a detailed diagnosis.

With the help of a dermatoscope, the doctor performs a focused examination of each neoplasm.

The entire diagnostic process takes about 15 minutes (more if there are a large number of neoplasms). It also takes 15-20 minutes to decipher the data after the review.

Advantages

Dermatoscopy is considered a painless and absolutely safe method of checking moles, and therefore it can be performed on both adults and children. Such an examination is recommended to be carried out once every six months (more often, if there is an indication from a dermatologist-oncologist).
