Seborrhea of the skin in adults and children: symptoms, diagnosis, treatment

Many of us have heard of a disease like dermatitis, but not everyone knows about its varieties. Let’s see what seborrheic dermatitis is.

Seborrheic dermatitis is considered one of the most common dermatological diseases resulting in spots, itching and scales on the skin. Thus, the secretion of sebaceous glands is impaired, and this is a favourable habitat for all sorts of microorganisms that can provoke inflammatory reactions. One of the most popular agents that provoke this reaction is the fungus Pityrosporum ovale.

This disease has nothing to do with allergic reactions of the body or peculiarities of hygienic skin care. The main factors that can provoke the development of seborrheic dermatitis:

  • diseases associated with impaired endocrine system;
  • negative effect of detergents on the skin surface;
  • neurological disorders;
  • lack of vitamins in the body;
  • increased sweating;
  • genetic predisposition;
  • immunodeficiency states.

Most often exacerbation of seborrheic dermatitis occurs in autumn and spring.

Seborrheic or atopic dermatitis

For effective treatment of dermatitis, first, you must determine its features and varieties. The most common types are seborrheic and atopic:

Seborrheic dermatitisAtopic dermatitis
This disease is provoked by a fungus, which in the process of reproduction begins to secrete products of its life. It leads to redness, itching and peeling of the skin.This is a non-infectious inflammation of the skin with an allergic origin. As a rule, people know from childhood about their disease and about the allergen that can cause such reactions.
Seborrheic dermatitis occurs in people with oily and shiny skin.Atopic dermatitis is characteristic of people with dry skin.
Hair sticks to the head, crusts of gray-yellow colour are formed. Acne, eczema and hair loss may occur.Dandruff appears, hair becomes thinner, partially falls out.

Seborrheic dermatitis in children: its causes

Seborrheic dermatitis in children is a common disease that is known around the world and is characteristic of all ethnic groups. It has not yet been possible to determine the exact cause of this disease in newborns.

However, there are a number of factors that can provoke such reactions:

  • heredity;
  • features of the microflora: entry into the body of yeast microorganisms;
  • individual intolerance of certain components contained in household chemicals;
  • too dry and hot air, which can cause excessive oiliness of the scalp.

Some experts believe that pediatric seborrheic dermatitis is directly related to the hormonal background of the mother.

The main symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis

In most cases, the main symptoms of seborrhea are yellowish scales located on the surface of the skin. They can be moist or oily in appearance.

In adults, seborrhea appears most often on the face:

  • near the nose;
  • in the eyebrows;
  • in the chin area;
  • behind the ears;
  • in the hair in the form of oily dandruff.

However, seborrheic dermatitis can be successfully masked by other skin diseases, and therefore for proper treatment you should visit a qualified dermatologist.
