Lip contouring is one of the most popular aesthetic medicine procedures. During the procedure, a hyaluronic acid-based filler is injected into the lips, allowing their volume to be increased and their shape to be corrected.
During consultations, patients most often say that they want to achieve a beautiful, natural-looking result without an overfilled appearance. There are also many questions about how to prepare for the procedure, what the recovery process is like, and what results can be expected in their particular case.
As a practicing cosmetologist in Lviv, I always emphasize to my patients that a good result after lip augmentation depends not only on the technique used and the quality of the filler, but also on how carefully patients follow the recommendations for preparation and recovery. Therefore, in this article, I will explain in detail the preparation process, aftercare, and rules that will help you achieve the most beautiful and natural-looking result possible.
Why Is Preparation for Lip Augmentation So Important?
The belief that all you need to do is show up on the scheduled day is incorrect because the body requires proper preparation for lip augmentation.
The injection of lip fillers based on hyaluronic acid is considered a minimally invasive procedure in which the product is injected into the lip tissues using a thin needle.
If your body is weakened, if you have inflammatory conditions, or if you have neglected your cosmetologist’s recommendations before the procedure, you should be aware that the risk of bruising, swelling, and unwanted reactions is significantly higher.
Before a lip augmentation procedure in Lviv, I always explain to patients that proper preparation minimizes post-procedure discomfort, shortens the recovery period, and makes the result more predictable.
How to Prepare for a Lip Augmentation Procedure: Step-by-Step Recommendations
- Two weeks before the procedure. I recommend starting with a consultation with a cosmetologist, as this allows me to assess the anatomy of your lips, evaluate your skin condition, collect your medical history, discuss the desired outcome, and identify any possible contraindications to the procedure. After the consultation, I recommend carefully monitoring your health, avoiding hypothermia, and limiting contact with people who show signs of acute viral illnesses. If you have long trips or flights planned in the near future, it is advisable, if possible, to reschedule the procedure for a more convenient period so that your body is not exposed to additional stress. I also do not recommend scheduling the procedure during menstruation, as pain sensitivity is often increased during this time and the risk of bruising may be higher.
- One week before the lip augmentation procedure, it is important to minimize factors that may affect tissue recovery after the contouring procedure. During this period, it is not recommended to sunbathe, visit tanning salons, undergo aggressive cosmetic treatments, or have other injectable procedures performed in the facial area. If you are taking medications that affect blood clotting or are prone to recurrent herpes outbreaks, be sure to inform your cosmetologist in advance.
- Two days before lip augmentation, it is recommended to avoid alcohol consumption, temporarily limit intense physical activity, refrain from any procedures around the mouth area, including hair removal, and avoid using products containing acids or retinol. Alcohol and intensive exercise can increase blood circulation, which raises the risk of swelling and bruising after the procedure.
- On the day of the lip contouring procedure, you should avoid alcohol, energy drinks, and excessive amounts of coffee. I also recommend getting a good night’s sleep, eating a few hours before the procedure, and maintaining a calm emotional state. Lip contouring is usually well tolerated because modern fillers contain an anesthetic, and additional local anesthesia can be applied if necessary.
What Happens After Lip Augmentation?

After the filler is injected, natural reactions associated with minor trauma to the lip tissues may occur. The most common side effects after lip augmentation include swelling, redness, mild soreness, or a feeling of firmness at the injection sites. In most cases, these effects are temporary and resolve on their own.
You should not evaluate the result immediately after the procedure, as the final lip shape develops gradually after the swelling subsides and the filler is evenly distributed throughout the tissues.
The first 24 hours after the procedure
The first day after lip contouring is especially important for proper recovery, so I recommend:
- applying cold compresses through a sterile cloth;
- avoiding excessive facial expressions;
- not touching your lips with your hands;
- not using decorative cosmetics.
It is also important to maintain adequate hydration, as hyaluronic acid is capable of retaining moisture within the tissues.
What Should You Not Do After Lip Augmentation?
After lip contouring, the body needs time to recover. That is why during the first few days after the procedure, it is important to follow your cosmetologist’s recommendations and temporarily limit certain usual activities.
- Avoid high temperatures – for two weeks, it is not recommended to visit saunas, steam baths, hammams, or tanning salons, as exposure to high temperatures promotes blood vessel dilation and may increase swelling. It is also advisable to avoid very hot food and beverages during the first 2–3 days.
- Limit intense physical activity – active workouts increase blood circulation, which may contribute to greater swelling. You can usually return to sports activities 5–7 days after the procedure.
- Avoid alcohol consumption – alcohol promotes fluid retention in the tissues and may increase swelling, so it is not recommended for at least the first five days after the procedure.
- Refrain from smoking whenever possible – smoking impairs microcirculation and may slow down the tissue recovery process.
- Postpone your visit to the dentist – dental procedures often require opening the mouth wide, which creates additional mechanical stress on the lips during the healing period.
How to Properly Care for Your Lips After a Lip Augmentation Procedure?
After the procedure, it is important to ensure adequate lip hydration. Use gentle lip balms, drink enough water, and protect your lips from ultraviolet exposure. Make sure your lips do not become dry or dehydrated.
When Should You Contact a Cosmetologist?
If any reactions go beyond what is considered normal, you should contact your cosmetologist. Such symptoms include severe pain, lip asymmetry, increased body temperature, worsening swelling, or changes in lip color. If you notice any of these symptoms, do not delay consulting a specialist.
Conclusion
With the help of lip contouring, a cosmetologist can enhance the natural beauty of the lips, correct lip asymmetry, and add volume. However, I would like to emphasize once again that a good result depends not only on the filler product and the cosmetologist’s technique.
If you follow the proper preparation guidelines before a lip augmentation procedure and take proper care of your lips afterward, the risk of complications is minimal, and the result will be beautiful and natural-looking.
